What is touchy? The second reading of today from Paul addressed to Timothy (2Tm 2:8-13). Life setting;- Paul is a deserted man. He is writing from a prison in Rome. He had had his first court case and nobody stood up to testify in his favour. So they had most probably testified against him. For pagans he was already guilty without being charged. In life we do find ourselves in Paul’s position; crucified by the people we love the most. Continue reading “28th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year C”

October 2019: A Missionary “Spring” in the Church

by Mr. David A Lugo, SJ

Pope’s Prayer Intention: In this extraordinary missionary month, let us pray that the Holy Spirit engender a new missionary spring in the Church.

On the Feast of the Ascension, before he ascended to the right hand of God the Father, Jesus said to his disciples: “[Y]ou will receive power when the holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). The end of Jesus’ public ministry and earthly life, therefore, is immediately followed by the descent of the Holy Spirit and the missionary work of the Church. Throughout the ages, Christian disciples have answered this call to witness to Christ by going throughout the world to preach the Gospel in foreign lands. This missionary zeal, however, has never been possible without the inspiration and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Think of Peter, for example, and how the power of the Holy Spirit that he received at Pentecost transformed him from a humble fisherman to the bold preacher and evangelist of the early Church. Increase our faith Lord!!

Make us climb the steps we have never climbed. Make us descend to where have never landed. Make what we feel and touch be tantamount with what we cannot feel and touch. We are in the world! Let us have a taste of heaven. This brings us back our school days when we were looking forward to a school trip. Our shoes and clothes would be prepared in anticipation. In our dreams, the bus we would travelling in would leave us. Why? We desire for the ‘unseeable’. Continue reading “27th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year C”

Christ, though he was rich, became poor to make us rich

1st reading
The prophet Amos is talking about political leaders people of power who live in luxurious places. They have nice beds and sleep on soft mattresses, their foods are delicious. They drink the best wine, they do not care about the things that are affecting the whole country. The end I would say is a terrible one so it is up to us if we live like them. Previous Sundays Gospel was based on the lost. The lost sheep, coin and son. By nature man is a wicked creature, his will is always against the will of God. We are forever lost in the mist of our imperfections but thanks be to God, by Jesus Christ His son who offered Himself as a sacrifice for the forgiveness of our sins.

1st reading: Am 8:4-7

God will punish those who have abused their power, authority, wealth to enslave His people.

1st reading Exodus 32:7-11, 13-14

The chosen people of God rebel against God. They created their own god, an idol, that they worshipped saying “this is our god who freed us from slavery. God told Moses that since they are thick headed He will destroy them. Moses intervened on their behalf, so we can say that he resembled Christ who intervened for mankind. This was a glimpse of salvation, God remembering His promise to Abraham and Isaac. God revealing His unending love for His people, that even if they have sinned against Him yet He totally forgives them. Continue reading “24th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year C”

Previous Sunday readings reminded us that we should be humble and God will exalt us. We should give honour to the poor and the lowly. This Sunday readings clarify to us how best can we fulfil that;

1st reading (Sir 3: 17-20. 28-29)

We are reminded that God the father who is the creator of all that is seen and unseen is wise, none of us can fully understand His ways neither His thoughts. Since we are born of men (flesh) our minds and our bodies are focused on earthly things for that is where the flesh belong. It is through the help of the holy spirit that the will of God can be revealed to us. Continue reading “23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year C”

September 2019: The protection of the Oceans

by Fr. Peter Schineller, SJ

Pope’s Prayer Intention: September 2019

Let us pray this month that politicians, scientists and economists work together to protect the world’s seas and oceans.

Oceans contain the bulk of our planet’s water supply, and also most of the immense variety of living creatures, many of them are threatened for various reasons.
Creation is a project of love given by God to humanity.
Our solidarity with the “common home” is born from our faith.
Let us pray this month that politicians, scientists and economists work together to protect the world’s seas and oceans.

Photos from the space station show planet earth as a beautiful blue marble with two-thirds of it covered by water. But here on earth, it is not so beautiful. We hear stories and see pictures of destruction. Ocean plastics kill millions of marine animals each year. Whales die with stomachs filled with plastic refuse. Coral reefs that sustain fisheries and tourism are disappearing. Every year 300 million tons of metals, sludge, and solvents are dumped into the world’s waters. One-third of fish species are threatened with extinction. Continue reading “September 2019: The protection of the Oceans”
