Novena in preparation to our Pilgrimage

IMG_3079Our pilgrimage

Our diocese is blessed with a beautiful tradition: coming together every year around the feast of the Assumption of Our Lady who is the patroness of our diocese. We come together as one family. We come together as brothers and sisters. We come together as one body. We come together to pray, to be with Jesus and to be sent again by Him to be good news to others.

A text

Someone suggested to me it would be good if this important event could be prepared with a novena of prayer and reflection.

That is why I prepared these simple pages going back to a beautiful text Pope Francis gave us last year: “The Joy of the Gospel”. This is the text I gave every priest, religious and parish of our diocese at my installation in January.

Together with it, I have chosen some biblical passages and questions to help us reflect and pray.

A theme

Pope Francis speaks of Christians as missionary disciples. That is why each day you will find something that identifies a missionary disciple (joy, conversion, God’s Word…).

I have also included a reflection on what a pilgrimage is. This is a text prepared by Fr Mel Loftus OSM for the Vicariate of Ingwavuma.

Wish you a blessed time and … see you in Florence!

The Event

The event was divided into three stages:

  1. The Grand March

  3. Speeches/Entertainment

The Grand march

IMG_2079A beautiful day it was! The weather was in favour of the St Mary’s Parishioners as they gather at the Lobamba bus terminal commonly known as Emasilahheni. The brand new Chevrolet utility van was the center of attraction even for non Catholics. All members of the church were there before the commencement of the grand march at 0900hrs.

Parish priest Fr Maseko, the Vicar, Fr Mahhazule, PPC, fundraising committee and the congregation in their numbers.

The grand march was led by the Salesian brass band and St Mary’s High drum majorettes. With excitement and joyful sound the congregation followed after the priced car. Lobamba community was stirred with awe to witness something never seen before. Whole Community came running to the road to behold and marvel what was unraveled before there sight. The congregate sang and dance all the way to St Mary’s mission where the Eucharistic celebration was to take place.

Eucharistic celebration (Holy Mass)

IMG_2112The ushers did a wonderful job to usher the multiple number of congregates into the small church structure. The Holy Mass was of high spirit. It was uplifting and edifying. The songs and prayers blended excellently with the atmosphere of jubilation and excitement. Fr Mahhazule (the vicar) and Fr Maseko led the congregation through the celebration. The choir responded with angelic melodies that embellished the house with full praise and adoration to God.

Fr. Mahhazule delivered a well prepared homily that encouraged and challenged the St Mary’s parishioners. “It begins with you”, is the phrase the vicar tied his homily to. It was his emphases to the congregation that St Mary’s Parish members must take the lead in the church building project.

After the Holy Mass was completed, the congregation was led by the Silesians Brass band to the tent. This is where the final part of the Launch was to occur.

Speeches/ Entertainment

IMG_2159Vibrant program directors did not disappoint as they kept dishing more to the congregation gathered under the tent. The directors thrilled the members with jokes and motivational words. All congregates remained gloomed to the front where speeches and entertaining entertainment was unfolding. Ticket sales personnel were as busy to, selling multiple of tickets at E50 each. Fr Mahhazule bought 20 tickets and promised to add even more, the Lobamba Member of Parliament doubled that and bought 40 tickets. A number of congregations promised to top that! Speeches were delivered from a number of individuals of whom most even pledged their support to the success of the project. Speakers included the Lobamba member of Parliament, Mr M Masilela, and GM motors sales representative to name but a few.

Entertainment included the Salesian Brass Band (yooooo…h! This boys are phenomenal, salute!), St Mary’s Girls and Boys dance group, St Mary’s Catholic Heavenly Voices and a Poem by Mrs Bazuzile Khumalo.

The Chairperson of the Parish pastoral council, Mr Sandlasenkhosi Ndlela made his closing remarks. He voiced out his vote of thanks and emphasized that this is just the beginning of a very long journey. He told the members that they still a lot to be done and requested assistance from every member. Lastly he informed members that the car was not donated by GM motors but is to be paid back in full at the end of the project.

Young Apostles of Christ

YAC1 1Last 21st June 2014 we organised a Seminar for the YAC at Sigcineni. There were 43 members present for the programme. It was  a wonderful day. Every body was extremely happy with the programme.

The Catechist on behalf of the Church members expressed his joy and appreciation to the sisters and to Fr. Joseph, who came for the celebration of the Mass.

Different issues were discussed on how to go about with the current situation of the youth as YAC and the Church at large. One of the important question was given to the groups to discuss and after the discussion the leader of the different groups  presented the outcome of the discussion  to the assembly. The following was the question and answers.

Discuss and write your opinion and observation why some of our members left the Catholic faith and embrace other denomination?
Answers:
  • Lack of the knowledge of Catholic faith (two groups)
  • Because of marriage
  • Because of a job offering
  • Distance to the church
  • No prophesy in Catholic Church (two groups)
  • Some believe Catholics are worshiping Mother Mary and idol worship.(all group)
  • Catholic are not reading the Word of God (all groups)
  • No musical instrument (All group)
  • Leaders of the Church are not living well
  • Priests are not living exemplary life
  • Too ritualistic
  • No proper understanding of Mother Mary and the Holy Trinity (two groups)
  • There is nothing that attract new members to join where as in other churches they are attracted by many things.
  • They think that there is no preaching.
  • Most of the people do not like the time of the Mass.
  • They don’t like the liturgy of the church.
YAC 1Sr.Theresa and Sr.Dimaya tried their best to clear all their doubts regarding our faith so that they help others. We believe that young people have potentials to change the society. Let’s work with them.
Motto: “Light of Christ, let it Shine.”

“World Refugee Day” at Malindza

World Refugee Day is celebrated Malindzaon June 20 every year. The Malindza Camp does it on the nearest Saturday. This year was no exception and with the present of national (the minister of Home Affairs, Her Royal Highness Princess Tsandzile), members of Parliament, local authorities (Chief Ndlondlo) and representatives of UNICEF and UNHCR we all gathered at midday at Malindza.
The program lasted a couple of hours and the refugees gave us a taste not only of their music and dances but also of their local food (at the end).
I was present as president of Caritas Swaziland who is implementing partner of the UNHCR. In the midst of the tragedy of a situation that has affected more than 50 million people in the world in invited everyone to celebrate “the courage, determination and faith of the millions of refugees worldwide who have been forced to take the difficult decision of abandoning their land and families in search of a better tomorrow in a foreign and sometimes hostile land.” together with “the spirit of the Swazi people who open their hearts and welcome them.”
Then, in the name of Caritas Swaziland, I renewed our commitment to continue with this service:
“I wish to conclude Honorable Minister, by pledging the commitment of the Roman Catholic Church through its social development arm, Caritas Swaziland, whose President I am, that we shall continually strive to ensure that refugees and asylum-seekers gain access to quality education, health-care and indeed are assisted to generate income aimed at improving their lives such that a certain measure of their dignity is restored to them.”
The Minister of Home Affairs invited us all to celebrate and appreciate the lives of those who have been displaced, to reflect on the progress made in this area and the challenges still present together with a commitment to find lasting and durable solutions. She also underlined an element we might miss: “refugees bring their experience and hope… they enrich our country”.
One thing that remained clear in my heart is that the service done by Caritas Swaziland at Malindza is done silently like many other services done by the church in the country.

On their way to the Diocese of Manzini

Ready, set, go!

NichellinoYesterday, Sunday 22nd June 2014, all the leaving/outgoing groups ready to live missionary experiences met to greet each other and receive the Turin Archbishop’s blessing in the headquarters of the Consolata Missionaries of Turin.

Songs, videos, prayers have been the core of the day to support everyone and give some easy tips to live with clarity and openmindedness a very nice time of reflection and to wish everyone to share the fire of love and joy in every corner of the world.

The Nichelino’s (small town near Turin) Group consists of 10 young people looking forward to meet their brothers in Swaziland, where they’ll be welcomed by José Luis, the Bishop and by all the people to spend with them a unique and unforgettable experience.

Diocesan priests update the diocesan webpage

photo(1)It was a great learning experience. We had met last week to start getting involved in media.

We then decided to “learn by doing”. We would all prepare something to be published: a text and a photo during the week and come together again to publish them.

We met in the evening for a couple of hours. The one who finished first helped another one.

The result: 7 new articles published by the priests (plus this one, of course!)
